The Wing-Sealed Letter — A Vaelith Story

A violet envelope with a wing-shaped wax seal on a clockmaker’s workbench.

The sign pointed west again.

This time, the traveler waited. At dusk, the mapmaker returned with a wrench. When shown both halves of the Kelvuro map, he stopped beneath the post.

“The watchkeeper knows who drew the northern road,” he said.

By morning, the traveler had found his shop. A woman named Mara was there, holding a violet scale. Something had left it beneath her door after knocking at her upstairs window.

The watchkeeper placed a letter on the bench. Two folded wings marked its wax seal.

Mara recognized the handwriting of a surveyor whose atlas she had repaired.

“The northern bridge is finished,” she read. “Vaelith will bring word. Let him show you what the map leaves out.”

Claws scraped the roof.

A winged creature landed in the courtyard, ducking beneath the laundry line. Violet scales followed his curved neck, their pale edges catching the morning light. A small gap beneath his throat matched the scale in Mara’s hand.

“Vaelith?” she asked.

He nodded toward the letter.

“I carried his notes across the river while they built the bridge. He is waiting on the far bank.”

“Can you take us?”

“As far as his camp.”

They left the next morning. Through Kelvuro, the red seam gave way to violet stone. Beyond the shelter, Vaelith led them north, pausing at broken steps to find firm footing.

At dusk, they reached the bridge.

A kettle hung over a cold fire across the water. Beside it stood an empty chair.

Mara called the surveyor’s name.

No answer.

The traveler noticed a note nailed to the first post.

“Do not cross after the lamps are lit.”

A light appeared beside the chair. Then another among the rocks, leading away from the road.

Vaelith spread one wing across the bridge.

“He had no lamps when I left.”

Across the water, the chair scraped backward.
