Beneath the Northern Bridge — A Rovek Story

Moonlit stone bridge where a cloaked traveler waits beside a black horse, with the purple wing-sealed letter in the foreground.

Vaelith’s wing remained across the bridge.

The second light moved between the rocks. The first stayed beside the empty chair. Then the chair scraped back again.

Mara unfolded the wing-sealed letter. A new line had appeared beneath the surveyor’s warning, pressed into the paper without ink: The road is below.

Under the bridge, moonlight caught a narrow track cut into the riverbank. A black horse stood at its entrance, reins loose and a lantern fixed to the saddle. The marks beneath his hooves continued north under the arch.

“Rovek,” Mara said. The surveyor’s atlas placed that name beside routes crossed once but never found the same way twice.

The horse lifted his head. A broad leather knot at his breast held a brass disk stamped with the same two wings as the letter.

Vaelith lowered his wing and pointed one claw toward the riverbank.

They followed Rovek down.

Beneath the arch, the lamps became reflections without flames. Each marked a sealed doorway numbered in the surveyor’s hand. Rovek passed three. At the fourth, he struck the ground once.

The brass disk opened along a hidden seam. Inside was a narrow strip of map. Mara fitted it against the Kelvuro halves. The northern road joined at last, then continued through the sealed doorway.

Behind them, the chair scraped for a third time.

Across the water, someone now sat beside the cold fire. The figure raised one hand and pointed toward Rovek.

Mara placed her palm against the fourth door. Warm air moved through the stone.

Rovek stepped forward. The door opened only as wide as his shoulders, revealing a descending road and a row of unlit lamps.

The first lamp caught fire.

Far below, something answered by ringing a bell.
