Butt Plug Sizes: Body, Neck, and Base Measurements

A butt plug, also called an anal plug, is a toy designed for anal use. Comparing butt plug sizes means reading several parts of the same product: the main body, the narrower neck, the external base, and the stated insertable length.

Start with the actual dimensions and a labeled diagram. Keep width separate from circumference, check the endpoints of each length, and look for the measurement state on inflatable models. Small, Medium, and Large identify options within a range; dimensions give you more to compare across different designs.

After the measurement examples, you’ll find practical guidance on preparation, lubrication, insertion, removal, and care.

Which body measurement are you comparing?

The widest part of the body may sit below the tip. A head-width measurement can therefore describe a different section from the maximum body width. Read both the label and the measurement arrows before comparing two numbers.

Butt plug diameter refers to a distance through the center of a circular cross-section. Width describes a distance across the product in a stated direction. On an oval or sculpted body, widths taken in different directions can differ. Keep a measurement labeled “width” when that is what the maker recorded.

Circumference follows the outside of a cross-section. Check where it was measured, especially when the body has raised texture. A ruler-measured width and a separately measured circumference describe different paths. Multiplying the width of an irregular shape by pi does not establish its actual circumference.

The neck needs its own measurements

The neck is the narrower section between the body and the base. Butt plug neck size can include both its width and its length. A narrow-looking neck in a photograph does not supply either number.

Compare the neck and body using the measurement labels and locations given for each. A wider body does not necessarily mean a wider neck. Ask for the neck’s measurement location and direction, along with its length between the body and base. None of these dimensions alone establishes comfort, retention, or an appropriate wearing time.

Check the endpoints of insertable length

Total length includes the external base. Anal plug insertable length describes the section the maker identifies for insertion, so its starting point and endpoint need to be clear.

For example, Kervyra’s Ornuvra record defines insertable length as the distance from the tip to the upper surface of the base. That definition belongs to this product record; check another model’s diagram before assuming the same endpoints.

Subtracting insertable length from total length does not give you neck length. The difference depends on where those measurements end, including the external base. A neck-length figure needs its own measurement.

Read the external base separately

The base is the external part below the neck. Record its width and front-to-back dimension when those figures are available, and use an underside or side view to understand its outline. Base dimensions belong in a separate part of your comparison from body dimensions.

For anal use, choose an anal-specific design with a sufficiently wide external base, and keep the base outside the body. The Sexual Medicine Society of North America emphasizes the importance of a wide enough base to prevent complete entry. If a toy becomes stuck, seek medical attention immediately. A product photograph can show the base’s shape, but it does not provide missing measurements or demonstrate retention performance.

A measured example: Ornuvra

Ornuvra shows how several measurements can describe one design. The figures below come from Kervyra’s seller-measured product record. Centimeters are the recorded measurements; inches are approximate conversions.

Swipe or scroll horizontally to compare all three sizes.

Ornuvra: seller-measured dimensions
Measurement S M L
Maximum body width 2.05 in / 5.2 cm 2.40 in / 6.1 cm 2.95 in / 7.5 cm
Circumference at widest point 6.57 in / 16.7 cm 7.64 in / 19.4 cm 9.25 in / 23.5 cm
Insertable length 3.07 in / 7.8 cm 3.74 in / 9.5 cm 4.25 in / 10.8 cm

For S, the head width is 1.46 in / 3.7 cm, while the maximum body width is 2.05 in / 5.2 cm. Looking only at the head measurement would miss the wider section below it.

The body widths were measured across the product with a ruler. Circumferences were measured separately around the widest part. Neck width, neck length, and base dimensions are not currently available in this record. S is the smallest option within this design; it is not presented as a universal beginner size.

Inflatable models need a stated measurement condition

For an inflatable butt plug, first check whether each dimension was measured uninflated or at a documented inflated state. Keep that condition beside every dimension. Also record the tool, measurement location, and method when they are supplied.

Vellunra illustrates why length needs attention as well as width. Its seller-measured record lists an insertable length of approximately 3.07 in / 7.8 cm uninflated and 5.63 in / 14.3 cm in the largest measured inflated state. These are two recorded conditions of one product, rather than two sizes for sale.

The inflated record describes an observed state. It does not establish a recommended inflation target, a safe operating limit, or a personal fit range. It also does not tell you the dimensions at an intermediate state or how many pump squeezes would produce one. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for operation and limits; a size table cannot replace them.

Using the measurements in practice

The following basics are general education for adults. Follow the instructions for your exact model, including its lubricant compatibility, operating limits, and cleaning requirements.

Wash your hands and clean the plug as directed. Check the body, neck, and base for tears, cracks, rough edges, or loose parts. Set a damaged toy aside. Have compatible lubricant within reach, and choose a position that lets you control movement and reach the external base.

Choose and apply compatible lubrication

Use plenty of personal lubricant suitable for anal use. Water-based lubricant is commonly recommended for silicone toys, but check both the toy instructions and lubricant label for compatibility. Lubricate the insertion surface and anal opening. Pause and reapply if the lubricant dries or friction increases. Adding force is not a substitute for lubrication. If using a condom, check its compatibility too; oil-based products can damage latex.

Insert slowly and keep control

Hold the external base and bring the lubricated tip to the anal opening. Breathe normally and guide the plug in slowly, pausing when you meet resistance. Stop if insertion hurts; do not force the widest section through or treat the listed insertable length as a depth you must reach. Keep the entire base outside the body.

During use

Keep the base accessible and pay attention to changes in how your body feels. Stop if pain, irritation, or bleeding develops. Follow the model’s stated wearing limits; a size label or comfortable moment does not establish an unlimited wearing time. If a partner is involved, agree that either person can stop the activity immediately.

Remove gently

For a non-inflatable plug, keep hold of the designated base or retrieval handle, relax, and withdraw slowly. Pause if there is resistance instead of pulling harder. If the plug becomes stuck or cannot be removed gently, seek medical attention rather than using tools or force. Severe pain or heavy bleeding needs urgent medical assessment.

Inflatable plugs: understand the release procedure first

Before using an inflatable model, confirm how its pump connects, how its release control works, and how to deflate it before removal. Keep the pump and release control accessible. Do not use an air hose or connector as a retrieval handle. Follow that model’s instructions for its starting condition and any inflation adjustments. Release the air using its specified deflation procedure before attempting removal; do not pull against an expanded body.

General inflatable guidance: b-Vibe. Follow the release procedure for the exact model you use.

Vellunra comes with a hand pump and hose. A magnetic inflation connector sits underneath the base, and the inflation assembly includes an air-release valve. Those component descriptions do not establish pump counts, a valve-turning direction, or what happens when the hose is disconnected. Confirm these details in the model’s instructions rather than treating its largest measured dimensions as an inflation goal.

Cleaning and storage

Clean the plug before and after use according to its own care instructions. For Ornuvra, the confirmed routine is warm water and mild, unscented soap. Gently clean the grooves, neck, and base, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to dry completely. Store it in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and sharp objects.

For a plug with a pump, hose, valve, or other components, check which parts may get wet and how each should be cleaned. A silicone body alone does not establish that the whole assembly can be submerged, boiled, or put in a dishwasher.

If sharing a compatible toy, use a new condom for each person. Clean it appropriately and change the condom before moving from anal use to another body opening. A barrier does not replace the product’s cleaning instructions.

Questions to resolve before choosing

What if the neck or base measurements are missing?

Ask for the specific missing dimensions and a labeled diagram. For example: “Could you confirm the neck width and length, the base width and front-to-back dimension, and the endpoints used for insertable length?” For an inflatable model, also ask which condition each figure describes.

Can a size chart tell me which plug will fit comfortably?

A size chart describes a product. It cannot determine an individual’s comfort or suitability. If you already have a plug you use comfortably, comparing the same measurements can make differences between designs clearer, but matching numbers do not guarantee the same experience.
